Resourcing widows with limited access to economic opportunity

Food Security  •   August 14, 2024

Yasmin’s husband used to work bringing fruits and vegetables from farms in Sa’ada to markets in Yemen’s capital, Sana’a. This not only provided food security for his family but also meant that he was an important part of the supply chain delivering food security to residents of Sana’a. When he was killed by an indiscriminate airstrike four years ago, Yasmin, a 35-year-old mother of five children, had only the sweat of her brow to fall back on.

“After my husband died, my children and I experienced great hardships,” Yasmin told the RSD team. “I found myself in a bitter battle of life or death from which there was no escape. I have done every manner of hard labor, such as farming, carrying soil on my head, and cutting firewood and transporting it to homes. These tasks are usually reserved for strong men. I was overlooked by relief programs until Raeduun began providing us with a regular aid basket that included red lentils, Basmati rice, fava beans, oil, soap, salt, and even sanitary napkins for women. Only God knows the stability and joy you have brought to our lives. Raeduun assesses people’s situation justly and makes sure that aid reaches those in the most vulnerable situations that many ignore.”
